ORLANDO, FLA.--The Portland Trail Blazers (4-3) led by Brandon Roy’s 27 points performance, beat the Orlando Magic (4-3) 106-99 thanks to outscoring the Magic 34-26 in the fourth quarter in front of 14,210 at Amway Arena.
The Trail Blazers went on an 11-0 run to start the fourth quarter resulting in an 83-73 Portland lead. The run was capped off with a three pointer by Rudy Fernandez in which he took a jab stepped to get his defender off-balance, then quickly stepped back to drain the triple.
"We’ve had leads going into the second half. Not only did I talk about it but [the team] talked about it, finishing the game off strong in the third and fourth quarter," said Nate McMillan.
Coming off the bench, Fernandez and Travis Outlaw combined for 36 points. Fernandez had 16 points while shooting 4-of-6 from the three point line. Outlaw finished with 20 points and five rebounds while hitting 3-of-5 from the three point line, which puts his three-point field goal percentage at 65% for the season.
With less than 30 seconds left in the game and Portland up by six, Outlaw tipped away Orlando’s inbounds pass, which was then grabbed by Steve Blake who was subsequently fouled. Blake converted on both free throws, putting the game out of reach for the Magic.
Blake started out by hitting the first two shots of the game and finished with 20 points, five rebounds and four assists while shooting 10-11 from the free throw line.
Monday's victory marks the first time this season that the Trail Blazers have outscored an opponent in the fourth quarter and is only the second time in the last eight attempts that they’ve beat the Magic.
Roy had his most productive first half of the '08-'09 campaign, tallying 17 points in the first two quarters. Roy finished with 27 points, four assists and three rebounds.
Roy experienced back spasms in the fourth quarter and is currently listed as day-to-day. He'll be reevaluated on Tuesday after Portland's off-day practice in Miami.
Dwight Howard and Hedo Turkoglu combined for 64 of Orlando's 99 points.. Howard’s aggressive post play got Joel Przybilla in early foul trouble, which limited the Trail Blazers' center to less than 10 total minutes. After a dominate first half, Howard managed just six points in final quarters, finishing with 29 points and 19 rebounds.
The Trail Blazers take on the Miami Heat Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. on Comcast SportsNet and The Blazers Radio Network.
