Hornets Spoil Oden’s Break Out Game

BY MIKE ACKER

NEW ORLEANS, LA — Portland rookie center Greg Oden recorded his first career double-double in 24 minutes off the bench with 11 points and 11 rebounds, but the Trail Blazers still fell to the New Orleans Hornets 87-82 in front of a crowd of 16,071 at New Orleans Arena.

The Hornets (5-3) handed the Trail Blazers (5-4) their first loss of their extended road trip and snapped a four-game Portland win streak, their longest of the season.

Oden entered the game with 2:02 left in the first quarter and made his first basket on a layup with 7:26 to go in the second. Oden’s basket came on one of Sergio Rodriguez’s team-leading seven assists.

Portland struggled offensively early in the first quarter, eventually relying on an 11-4 run to tie the game at 19-19. Joel Przybilla scored six of his eight points in the first quarter, making all three of his shot attempts in the period.

The Trail Blazers put together a solid second quarter, using a 9-2 run to finish the half ahead 44-41. Brandon Roy finished the opening half with 10 points and Rudy Fernandez added eight. Fernandez shot 2-for-4 for the three-point line in the first half.

New Orleans used swarming defense in the second half, keeping the Trail Blazers from getting into a rhythm offensively. Portland was held to 18 points in the third quarter, and 20 points in the fourth. The Trail Blazers made only three field goals in the final period. Roy hit two threes in the last minute of play, which were Portland’s only field goals in the last 6:59. Roy finished the game with 21 points, shooting 7-of-17 from the field.

Oden put up seven points in the fourth quarter. He pulled down his tenth rebound with 4:13 left in the fourth, and made his 10th and 11th points from the line a little more than a minute and a half later. With 2:19 to go in the game Oden hammered down a ferocious block on Hornets forward David West. Oden finished with four blocks for the game.

Portland, not to be out done on the defensive end, held New Orleans point guard Chris Paul to under 20 points and 10 assists for the first time of the season.

New Orleans relied on two late three-point baskets from former Boston Celtic James Posey to seal the win. Posey’s second three came with 1:26 remaining in the contest, immediately following two Oden free throws which had cut the Hornets lead to one.

The Trail Blazers will be back in action Saturday night in Minnesota. That game tips off at 5 pm Pacific Time.
